Mark David McGwire (born October 1, 1963), nicknamed "Big Mac", is an American former professional baseball first baseman who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1986 to 2001 for the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire was one of the most powerful hitters in baseball history, and he is known for breaking Roger Maris's single-season home run record of 61 in 1998 with 70 home runs.

McGwire was born in Pomona, California, and raised in La Verne, California. He attended Damien High School, where he played baseball and basketball.

McGwire was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round of the 1981 MLB draft, but he did not sign. He was drafted again by the Athletics in the first round of the 1984 MLB draft, and this time he signed.

McGwire made his MLB debut in 1986, and he quickly became one of the most feared hitters in the league. He led the American League in home runs in 1987 with 49 home runs, and he was named the AL Rookie of the Year. McGwire also led the AL in home runs in 1991, 1996, 1997, and 1998.

In 1998, McGwire and Sammy Sosa engaged in a historic home run chase. McGwire broke Maris's single-season home run record of 61 on September 8, 1998, and he went on to hit 70 home runs for the season. Sosa hit 66 home runs for the Chicago Cubs that season, and the two players helped to revitalize interest in baseball.

McGwire retired from baseball after the 2001 season. He finished his career with 583 home runs, which is fifth all-time. McGwire was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

McGwire's legacy was tarnished in 2005 when he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs during his career. However, he is still considered to be one of the most powerful hitters in baseball history, and his home run chase with Sosa in 1998 is one of the most memorable moments in baseball history.
