Johnny Cash (born J.R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contained themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in the later stages of his career. He was known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice, the distinctive sound of his Tennessee Three backing band characterized by train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor, free prison concerts, and a trademark all-black stage wardrobe, which earned him the nickname the "Man in Black".

Cash is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. His genre-spanning music embraced country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel sounds. This crossover appeal earned him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His music career was dramatized in the 2005 biopic Walk the Line, in which Cash was portrayed by American film actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, and raised in Dyess, Arkansas. He began his music career in the early 1950s, recording with Sun Records. In 1955, he released his hit single "Folsom Prison Blues", which established him as one of the leading figures in the country music scene. Cash continued to release hit singles throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", and "Jackson".

In the 1970s, Cash's career began to decline. He struggled with drug addiction and personal problems. However, he made a comeback in the late 1970s with the release of the album One Piece at a Time. Cash continued to release albums and tour throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He died in 2003 at the age of 71.

Cash is considered to be one of the most important and influential musicians of all time. His music has crossed genres and generations, and his legacy continues to inspire artists today.
