The sculptor Philippe Poitevin was born in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, France, in 1831. He studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and he exhibited his work at the Paris Salon from 1855 until his death in 1907. Poitevin was known for his realistic and detailed sculptures of people, animals, and mythological figures. He also created a number of decorative sculptures for public buildings and monuments.
