Carl Michael Yastrzemski Sr., nicknamed "Yaz", is an American former professional baseball left fielder who played his entire 23-year career with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.


Yastrzemski was born in Southampton, New York, and played college baseball for Bridgehampton High School, where he set numerous records in basketball, football and baseball. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 1957 MLB draft and made his MLB debut in 1961.


Yastrzemski quickly established himself as one of the best players in baseball. He was a seven-time Gold Glove winner and an 18-time All-Star. He also won three batting titles and was named the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1967.


Yastrzemski's 1967 season was one of the greatest individual seasons in baseball history. He led the American League in batting average (.326), home runs (44), and RBIs (121). He also led the league in runs scored (112), hits (231), and on-base percentage (.418). Yastrzemski led the Red Sox to the American League pennant in 1967, but they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.


Yastrzemski continued to be a productive player throughout his career. He retired in 1983 with 3,419 hits, 452 home runs, and 1,844 RBIs. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.


Yastrzemski is one of the most beloved players in Red Sox history. He is also considered to be one of the greatest all-around players in baseball history. He was a great hitter, fielder, and runner. He was also a great leader and teammate.
