The Shield nickel was the first United States five-cent piece to be made out of copper-nickel, the same alloy of which American nickels are struck today.The coin was designed by James B. Longacre, who was also the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint at the time. It has a diameter of 20.5 mm and a weight of 5 grams, and it is made of 75% copper and 25% nickel.
